How the estimate works
Driving time is distance divided by your average speed. Breaks and overnight pauses use the values you enter. The tool does not choose actual stop locations or include live traffic, time-zone changes, lodging or meals unless you enter the cost as an extra.
Worked example
At 50 miles per hour, a 100-mile leg takes 2 hours of driving. At 25 US mpg and $4 per gallon, fuel costs $16. With no other costs and two people sharing equally, the estimate is $8 each. Actual travel time and costs will vary.
Road and vehicle planning
Use current route information and check road and weather conditions. Consult your vehicle manual for maintenance and stop when you are tired. The checklist is a reminder, not a mechanical inspection.
Emissions
For gasoline and diesel, the estimate uses approximately 8.89 and 10.18 kg of tailpipe CO₂ per US gallon respectively. Electric vehicles do not have tailpipe emissions; the calculation excludes electricity generation and other lifecycle emissions.
